A buddy and I climbed Beirstadt and Evans from the Guanella Pass Trailhead around July 6. Beirstadt was pretty easy and uneventful, but walking over the sawtooth proved to be difficult. Halfway across, we came across a giant snowfield that was too steep and dangerous to cross. Thinking we didnt want to go all the way down to the lake and back up again, we tried to climb over the snow. The climbing kept getting steeper and more dangerous until finally we ran into a giant cliff wall that was impossible to climb. In way over our heads already, we luckily managed to make it down to the lake without breaking our heads open. From there, we climbed all the way back up to Evans without any problems. We headed down the big stream that goes into the gully, where we lost the trail and were forced to bushwhack around the swamps. This turned out to be very slow and a little painful, so we decided to get wet and walk through the river and marshes the rest of the way. Very cool hike, but wouldve been a lot better if we couldve found a better way through the gully.
