Mt. Evans via Echo Lakes TH - 8/27/05

Started hike at Echo Lakes TH at 9AM. Jogged the 1st mile due to concerns about weather, given the long hike. Reached Summit Lake at 11:15. Had trouble finding the NE face trail and wasted some time hiking somewhere between the NE & NW faces, until I discovered the NE Face trail. I then got slowed up a bit by having to carry some trash up about 1/2 way up this trail (old paint can, copper tubing and a 7 section of highway guardrail - saw a rusted old bed frame but didnt have the energy to haul this up myself...). Probably could have cut 20 minutes off the trip as the upper portion of the NE Face trail really needed the use of both hands for traction, IMO. Reached the peak at 12:30 (actually hiked the final pitch with my family - their first semi-official 14er

Ran into members of CFI on the ascent from the upper Chicago Lake to Summit Lake - trail is pretty nice (hats off to CFI)!!

The Chicago Lakes trail is beautiful and I only saw 3-4 other hikers - well worth the trip!!! To save my knees I got a ride back down the rock from my family - well worth the $10 access fee.

Saw my first ptarmigan in the wild, which was pretty exciting. Plenty of other wildlife along the way. Even without my binoculars I could tell that Mt. Bierstadt was jam packed, so we should be getting some input on that peak soon.
