 Columbia - West Slopes

Realigned route constructed by CFI (and Southwest Conservation Corps) consists of 7,000 ft + of new trail that circumvents the steep, loose scree portion of the route as detailed in the route description. This is CFI's fourth season constructing the trail and it will be complete next summer per my discussions with crew members that I passed while summiting. Think about that - 5 years to build a project such as this one - no small undertaking. These are some hard working, strong young ladies and gentlemen to be sure and I am highly appreciative of all they have accomplished. The project is approximately 90 percent complete. Incredible craftsmanship with impressive staircases, rockery walls, etc. rivaling that of the CCC and built to last. I believe I was the only one to summit this Friday, likely a combination of it being post holiday as well increased monsoon activity . I was not aware the new trail was accessible prior to my arrival, so this was an extremely pleasant surprise as I was dreading the scree. Was rained and hailed on upon reaching treeline on my descent (at noon). Began hiking from North Cottonwoord TH at 5 a.m. and returned to same at 1:30 p.m. Gorgeous Class I approach along Cottonwood Ck.
