Perfect weather, maybe even too hot... Trail was easy to follow. I wore snowboarding boots, no snowshoes. The snow was 6"-10" above tree line, but this was due to the snowstorm two days before.
I was surprised that I was the only person on the mountain. The summit log showed that two people had reached the summit the day before. When I reached the trailhead I saw a couple packing up from a below tree line snowshoe hike. But I never saw anyone actually on the trail all day!
It took me 4 hours to reach the summit due to deep snow, but 22 minutes to get down to my car. I had to get out of my bindings 3 times due to rocksgravel, and gullies, and maybe walked a total of 100 feet the whole decent!
It was a great day, and the snowboarding was soooo rewarding! I am not sure I will do another early 14er without at least seriously thinking about bringing my snowboard with.
Also I was wondering if anyone new anything about the Quandary dog? When left my car at ~7AM I saw a Golden Retriever Mix follow me for about 100 feet and then turn around. When I was at the summit the log showed that an unknown dog had accompanied the two guys that hiked up the day before me. When I was packing up my car the couple that I saw snowshoeing where talking about the "Quandary Dog" (it is on its nametag) Apparently it's a Golden Retriever that has summitted at least 100 times and just follows people up the trail. Does anyone have any more knowledge about this?
