 Slow pokes intro to mountaineering - not a hike!   

So first, the trail starts beautifully just as expected per the route description. However, the trail quickly "dead ends" where I thought there was supposed to just be a stream crossing. Well you do cross the stream, but there isn't a real obvious path along the stream but that only lasts like 1/5 of a mile then you cross again and the trail is pretty obvious from there. Though you cross a few steams or smaller river sections until you get to a point where the trail kind dead ends again at the river edge. I thought I messed up but there really isn't another way to continue on the actual trail that I saw other than to just cross there but might be that I missed it. At current river height (could imagine in spring worse ) to get across without getting your feet wet, there are some stepping stones that mean if you have some waterproofing you can probably get by without getting soggy socks. I personally choose on the way up to just take off my socks and shoes and just walk across. NBD for me. On the way back went with stepping stones and ended up with a little moisture but my feet were already all gross at that point anyway. Lol.

Anyway, the lost in the woods comment I saw on another trip report made me worry since did this solo, but for me it was unwarranted worry since I go pretty slow and therefore have time to take care in route finding. Also the trail follows the stream up, so even if you lose the trail feel someone with hiking experience could easily find it again by just skirting along the river until one final crossing that is documented in the original trip report. Anyway, think the trail is in pretty good shape and pretty obvious the whole way.

I took the gully route there and back. I will say even if you don't have a hiking helmet big whatever you have got! I felt really dumb not having one. People will throw rocks on there way up and down as you travel below them. Of course our community is pretty good about warnings - amen! Some folks commented they thought this gully route was too dangerous. For me this was my first class 3 and I was more comfortable here then I was on one small section of Missouri.

Yes there is scree and no I don't this is one of those trails you can dream about running all the way up unless you are cenatour. However, while slow going if you are a nervous Nelly like me, there are hand and foot folds everywhere in the gully. That is what makes this mountain a real climb instead of a hike. This didn't feel like the normal light scrambling I have experienced on other 14ers. Your face will be within inches of the mountain for at least a half hour. Doesn't warrant ropes and clearly is doable but this is real mountaineering. I personally loved it!

Now for the timing for my fellow slow pokes. Since the road to the trailhead required more care than expected and I pressed snooze by accident (three times). I did not get going on the trail until 8 am, summited around 145 PM, and finished at 530 PM. Of course, if you are a slow poke that means this mountain isn't for days that even have a chance of tstorms. Also, for those that are only in mediocre (aka non athletic) shape like myself the real physical challenge was getting up to saddle. For me, the mental game of slowly climbing up the gully distracted me. I forgot that I was even tired and I was really tired all the way up to that saddle.
