 My DeCaLi Hike

Gorgeous day! I did do the full loop, but bypassed Mt. Bross without summiting that one.

Here's why I skipped Bross: 1) I was now alone, or so it seemed. I wasn't sure I should do the peak solo. 2) I'm almost 62, not really old, but feeling the burn from three peaks already, and knew I still had a few miles left to descend. I didn't know how far the stretch was to the summit and back. I just chose to be safe rather than sorry.

Here is a summary of my times:

Arrived at Kite Lake TH: 6:40 am
Started trail to Mt. Democrat: 7:10 am
Summited Mt. Democrat: 9:35 am
Started down Mt. Democrat: 9:50 am
Summited Mt. Cameron: 12:00 noon
Summited Mt. Lincoln: 12:30 pm
Started down Mt. Lincoln: 12:55 pm
Returned to Kite Lake TH: 3:40 pm

This was on a Friday. Democrat was the busiest trail, and Cameron still had several hikers, but by the time I was approaching Lincoln, I was almost alone. When I left Lincoln I was so alone, until getting closer to the descent down the Bross trail, then I was joined by a few others.

I took the wrong turn on the Bross trail down. I should have taken the directions out of my pocket and followed the advise to continue further down the ridge on the right side, rather than follow others down the left side of the ridge. I expected lots of scree, and thought it would be loose gravel. There was enough of that, but mostly it was large, loose shale and granite chunks, and on a very steep slope, to make it worse.

These peaks were 14'ers # 5, 6, and 7, for me. I used trekking poles for my first time; just bought a pair the day before. They saved my butt a few times as I was descending the side of Bross. I can't imagine how hard it would be not having them. They also reduce leg strain and give you a little upper body workout. Poles are my friends!

It was a great day overall. My feet hurt at the end but I did not get blisters. I was stiff but limbered up okay in the morning.

Have fun and be safe,
Gail
