In Search of Snow in the Big Park - McHenrys Peak

Peak: McHenrys Peak (13,327') - Rocky Mountain National Park
Date: October 30, 2016
Trailhead: Glacier Gorge (9,180')
Approach: South Slope via Stone Man Pass
Distance: ~13 miles
Elevation Gain: ~4,200 ft.
Participants: Will Robnett, Dillon Sarnelli

Rocky Mountain National Park has seen 4,000,000 visitors to date this year. On Sunday there were 3, including Will and myself. I counted.

First it should be noted that we survived the gale force winds that come standard with parking in the Glacier Gorge lot. Visitor number 3, in his Levi's sporting a TX license plate, wasn't so lucky. Dude didn't make it past the TH sign. Keep reading...

Yeah, I still hope to get this one someday! Been back there several times now and have scoped out the area from both sides. Very cool rime ice! Saw this phenomena first hand a few years ago on Yale. And yeah, with that kind of backdrop, it's pretty easy to get spectacular photos. Great job, guys, and thanks for sharing!

Looks fun, I need to give it a try when it is DRY! Views look amazing up there, in my limited experience it is hard to go wrong in the park!

...and a nice write-up. My dad and I did McHenrys Peak on 7/12/1970 from a backcountry camp at Black Lake. I remember lots of mud on the trail and how square Black Lake looked from above. Good memories.

BTW, lists aren't dumb if they get you into areas you might not visit otherwise.

Doug - thanks! Put it on your summer 2017 list. You'd enjoy it. It throws a little bit of everything at you from Stone Man. Fun day for sure and you'd kill it because you're an animal! If I slack off and forget to write a TR for a while again, wishing you and fam a Happy Thanksgiving!

Andrew - thanks man!! good question. As for routes, I thought the south ridge on Meeker in spring snow was a great day. Also, that first attempt at McHenrys from Arrowhead is way up there. I'll definitely give that a go again. Pagoda in winter from GG was probably one of my favorite days of all time if only for that inversion.

Tornadoman - For sure. Never a bad day in the Park man! And don't get me wrong, I like snow AND dry. Snow just changes things up a little and makes the post climb beer a little tastier.

Eddie - thanks! 46 years ago. Amazing. Black Lake is still pretty square, but no mud on this day. And upper GG is still in a class all by itself. As for lists, I couldn't agree more. When lists trump fun and bad ass and friends though, that's no good. They're good in moderation IMO. Let me know if there's any Wemi on your 2017 calendar!

I've got a couple dozen peaks on my radar. Tricentennials, plus some repeats of bicentennials and centennials. Planning to visit the Elks and Sangres as well.

Does your table indicate that I've been up Longs more times than you have? You better sort that out man. Never mind that I've never been up any of those other ones.

Ali - thanks! #vistornumber3

Gilbert - I'll tell you the real number of times I've been up Longs on a 14er this winter. Bonus points if you wear your banana suit buddy.
