 Stewart Peak (13983)

The fall colors in the La Garita Wilderness are at their peak beauty. The 28.5-mile drive to the 11,500-foot Cebolla Trailhead east of Colorado 149/Slumgullion Pass was spectacular. Although there is a sign at the trailhead, just off the road on the right at a hard-left corner in the road, there is no clear indication stating "Cebolla Trailhead". Regardless, as I started hiking at 7:15am, I found the trail to be very distinct, switchbacking to the west and then south to treeline. I continued SW through the willows, the straight-line path made easy by a series of tall wooden poles. Following the willows I hiked SE, staying well below the 13,401-foot Baldy Chato. (I spotted some ptarmigans, well-camouflaged amongst the occasional band of rocks on these N-NE facing slopes.) I traversed the grassy slopes east of and below the entire south ridge-line, staying at about 13,000 to 13,200 feet until reaching the 13,300 shoulder to the west of Stewart. I arrived at the summit of the highest 13er (13,983') at about 10:45am. The weather was a bit cooler, with more clouds than my moment on Jones Mtn yesterday, but still very comfortable. (As with Jones, no summit register.) I left the summit about 11:15am, arriving back at the trailhead at about 1:30pm. Next stop - the town of Creede and a date with Phoenix Peak.

We were up there about a week after you. The number of ptarmigans was stunning. The difference in weather (you: sun; us: wind, rain, snow) was also apparent.
