 Crystal - East Face

East Face Crystal Peak Ski
Round Trip: 8.7 miles
Total time: 4 Hrs

Started at the Spruce Creek Trailhead and proceeded to first right onto Jeep Trail which leads to Crystal lakes. Skinning was easy up to the choke. At the choke we ran into a lot of trouble gaining traction on the 40-45 degree slope. I would highly recommend ski crampons. Unfortunately, we did not have them, but was still able to make it up at a slower pace. After the choke, we were able to skin up to about 13,000 ft. From 13,000 ft to the summit we chose to boot pack bc of a hard crust on the surface, but we did see skin tracks almost to the summit.

The ski down from the summit ESE started out punchy off the summit then smoothed out to softer packed snow from 13,000-11,000 feet down through the lakes and the choke. Small sluff at the choke, but nothing significant.
The jeep road led us straight back to spruce creek trail and trailhead with an easy ski out in some softer slush.

Note: It was slightly overcast in the morning and turned to sunny when we summited around noon. Forcasted high for Blue River was 47 degrees with an overnight low of 27. Avy conditions were rated at a 2(moderate) mostly because of recent wet slides.

Overall, it was a great trip and I look forward to returning to similar areas in the tenmile.
