Little Bear West Ridge Direct & Traverse to Blanca
I know there are several great LB - Blanca trip reports, but I wanted to give a link to my most recent write-up of our trip last weekend down in the Blanca Group primarily for beta & pics of Little Bear''s west ridge direct. It really was a stellar way to climb LB. Hope you enjoy!
Nice work! I enjoyed the shots of the various spots along the ridge up to LB and then the traverse. I still have that traverse ahead of me, so I'll look for this report again come next May...thanks!
Great report, looks like a great day. There is still a ton of fun to be had in CO even when you are resting your arms. The beta on the ridge direct will be very helpful!

I've been thinking more and more about the Bear as I *slowly* work my way into the harder 14ers. Not sure which route I will ultimately take, but I would like to avoid the Hourglass. That looks like one heck of a day combining a non-standard route on LB with that gnarly traverse!
Nice work Brandon and crew. Congrats on the West Ridge Direct, that looks like a ton of fun and a route you definitely don't see much of around these parts. Baby Thunder is one gnarly looking chute from above isn't it? And of course, congrats on the LB/Blanca traverse. One of the better routes you're glad you did but may never do again, at least that's how I looked at it. Sorry to hear about your throat. You could always go back and do Ellingwood as a snow climb/ski.
Tornado - the west ridge direct sure is a good alternative to that Hourglass. may be worth a consideration especially if you do a few of the other harder 14ers first.
Ben - thanks, man. Yes, that Baby Thunder is VERYITALICIZED TEXT gnarly!Whoa, baby. Have you skied it? Good idea on going back to Ellingwood for a ski. I think that's exactly what I will do. Was hoping for a weekend to get in the Gores with ya for a cool Fall trip, but with all this weather our Fall is dwindling by the minute. Maybe there is still hope. Cheers to you too!
Could be fun to give something a shot! Ellingwood is a fun ski, you can't go wrong hitting that peak in snow conditions. We did ski Baby Thunder after the Hourglass, but the true entrance a hundred or so feet below the ridge line is a lot friendlier than you'd expect. Definitely a tight chute, but more reasonable than it looks upon first glance .
My hat is off to you for heading down Baby Thunder, Ben. Yes, a Gore ski this winter sounds great. We're gone until the 2 week in January to Antarctica, but after that, game on!
