 Favorite range = San Juans

San Luis Peak 09/07/2013

So after having attempted every 14er, I can start to think about 14er superlatives. My next report will (hopefully) contain a snagging of the El Diente / Mt. Wilson traverse, and will likely contain many of my thoughts on favorite this and that, but for sure I know one of them:

San Juans are my favorite range.

Two words: Chicago Basin.

Not good enough, lets try two more:

Uncompahgre Wetterhorn

Still unconvinced? Well try this on for size:

Sunshine Redcloud.

Lets not even mention Handies or Sneffles, either one arguably hidden 14er gems.

Just driving through down the million dollar highway and taking in the ethereal views begs the notion that it is a truly unique part of the state.

The least popular of the San Juans - San Luis - is the hybrid San Juan. It is near the intersection of the San Juans, the Sangre De Cristos, and the Sawatch, and is reminiscent of both a San Juan and a Sawatch. The trail is the most mellow easy going trail ever, and the scenery is equally laid back. The scenery below treeline is enchanting, and the scenery above treeline is broad and expansive. With the exception of a fishing trip to Machin Lake and climbing Uncompahgre and Wetterhorn, this was an area of the state completely new to me.

I needed this peak this weekend because of an injured knee. This is the perfect peak for even the least capable of us to hobble around on.

I haven't visited Sangres and Elks enough to decide for certain, but San Juans are great. Had a great time on Wetty, Unc, and Sneffels, and San Luis was my first. Impressive reading about your outings over the past year. Looks like you'll be finishing soon.

I agree- the San Juans are incredible. The Wilson group is my least favorite part of that range. I did the El D-Wilson traverse 5 or 6 weeks ago. I loved the North Buttress up El D (highly recommend that route if you like class 3/4 scrambling) and enjoyed the traverse. The rock quality on Wilson is crap though. Be careful on the descent. It's pretty terrible.
