 Mount Elbert- The Long Way

My Mom, dog, and I started hiking after spending half an hour trying to find a discontinued trailhead to hike from . After we found the trailhead(Twin Lakes- old 14ers books have it), we hiked up the road a little bit and followed a rusty sign that says 'Mt. Elbert' and looks a century old around two beaver lakes with lodges. We hiked the worn out path for 1/2 a mile to the Colorado Trail, which we followed for another 1/2 mile to the Mount Elbert trail. About 1/2 a mile up the trail was a tree that contains a Wasp nest which surprised all of us! It was a long hike to the top, 5 miles from the car, without much excitement except my dog barking at other dogs. Finally! We were at the top! All of the hiking paid off and I was on top of the state! We only had enough time to eat a Granola Bar each(even the dog) before we started down due to storm clouds. About 100 yards from tree line, it started pouring rain on us, and we saw people heading up still. The hike down from there was long, wet, and cold for 2 miles. When we reached the beaver ponds, it stopped raining, but the beavers were not out. About 5 feet from the car, BOOM!!!!! Thunder started. We all got up and down safely, even if I had to wear my Pajama pants because I left my sweat pants at home!

Congrats on the summit! Elbert is a beautiful place.
I personally like the pajama pizzaz - glad you didn't let that slow you down.
Climb on!
Thanks for posting.
