 A big day for Puppy

I have 3 Sawatch left and I had the itch to get one more off the list...

I am a dog guy...I have 3. Last Oct I put my 13 year old lab Bodie down. He was worn out from a great life. He joined me on at least 15 summits of 14ers. It was painful to say the least. Not long after I got a new pup...a Catahoula. I now have my 13 year old female chocolate lab named Hoochie, a 5 year old Border Collie/Collie mix named Lady ( she has around 16 summits with me), and my new female Catahoula, appropriately named Puppy! This was to be her first 14er!!

Drove out to Winfield and the 4wd TH Sat there around 10 pm. Laid out my sleeping bag on the ground and tried to sleep. Didn't get much. I left Hoochie at home, as she has bad hips and loves to relax. I had Lady and Puppy with me. I set my alarm for 4:30 am, as i wanted an early start, avoid any weather, and get back home at a reasonable time.

I was on the trail by 5:10 am. It was just light enough to not need my headlamp, which I forgot at home anyway! I knew the trail was moderate, only a 6.75 mile RT, and felt I could beat any weather. Off we went...2 dogs and me.

A group of 4 had started before me but I passed them right at the upper basin. They were from Arkansas. It was just a few minutes later that it started to sprinkle. Nothing major but the rain gear went on.Only rained for about 20 minutes or so. Dogs found water in some creeks still running. All in all an easy ascent. Made the summit in 2:23. Hung out on top for about 20 minutes. Started down and passed at least 50 people headed up! Really glad I got the first summit of the day, had it to my myself, and avoided the crowds. Made it down in 1:20...back at the truck by 9:00 am. A very easy and straight forward 14er. The 4wd road is a bit rough but it went ok.

Puppy did awesome. She has done mtn bike rides and hikes with me but I know she will enjoy my hikes of 14ers as she lives her life with me and my dogs.

Catahoula's are cool dogs. I took my german shepherd on her first climb in June.
