Seaching out snow this year has been a little tough. This season's spring and summer has been so hot that what little snow we did get has been melting out fast. The temps have just bee so hot out there. Thankfully the internet has forums so you can post up threads ask people for beta on areas. I started a thread over on www.14ers.com about Indian Peaks conditions and it paid off. I called up Jon and we hatched a plan to ski as much as we could around Brainerd Lakes.
We headed up from the trailhead at 7:15 and made great time to Blue Lake in just under 1:30 hours. From there we booted up Crooked Couloir and continued on to the summit. We looked down Coney Couloir and found about 900' of vertical. So we hatched the plan to ski Coney first and then hike back up and ski Crooked. If the weather held we'd head for Toll.
The ski of Coney was sweet and steep. I kicked into tele mode once again though and spent a little time cranking my bindings down again. After that I made some more turns and the binding seems to be holding well. Jon ripped it a new one. After the ski we booted back out of the line and took the steeper spicier exit... I use F4 spray on wax before I hit the trail in the morning. I wasn't getting any stickiness from the snow this day. Earlier in the spring and especially on the southern routes grabbiness was a problem. Things are set up now on the snow that has managed to stick around.
