 Grays Peak - Standard

Simple trip report from a week ago. Climbed Mt Grays with a couple friends.

We started around 6 am below the road avalanche. I'm guessing by end of June all the avalanche snow will be melted and one can drive all the way to summer trailhead. One brave person drove over it in a jeep already.

During entire ascent the snow on trail was crusty and hard enough to walk over no problems. There was a lot of snow on the trail. In fact I'd say about 2/3rds of the trail was snow covered.

We summited about 11 am, the snow and 30 mph steady wind really slowed us down. As a public service we built up one of the stone walls another 2 feet while on the summit, to keep the wind off us while we rested. We were originally planning on doing Torreys but the entire trail to Torrey's was snow covered, and the wind was terrible. Had some very good glissading down the front side of Grays.

We made it back to car at about 1 pm. It warmed up a lot and so the entire way down was slushy wet snow and some post holing. Some people were just heading up at 1 pm! Guess they are gamblers with the storms.
