Mt Sherman Main route |
---|
We looked at the weather for Saturday and Sunday and even though Sunday looked a little better (read LESS WIND) we decided none of us wanted to go back to work after the years first 14er....even is it is ONLY Sherman. The group of us meet at the summer trailhead around 8am. The road was good all the way. I don't think you would even need a 4wd to get up there now. After everyone who had not met said their hellos we set off around 815am We followed the main road past the gate up to the first of the old Levrich sp? mine leftovers After that we hit our first bit of snow. There where other ways around the snow that could get you where you wanted to go but it seemed the most direct route and since the slope was not steep enough to risk an avalanche we took off. After recovering the main route we hiked for aprox 3/4 of a mile to another section of snow leading up to the saddle between Mt Sheridan and Mt Sherman. This one was a bit steeper with a small cornice at the top and I would not say I totally recommend it So this is where things got fun...we looked at the weather and expected some wind but nothing like the high altitude hurricane that we got slammed with once on the ridge! Sustained winds of around 40 with gust into the 60s the whole way up! Did have time to get a few pics though. We where in luck though, the winds on the summit itself where not near as bad. We spent almost 45 minutes up there having a few drinks and taking pictures Once we had our fill of the summit we rushed back down. Half the group took a more direct route out of the wind. We went back the same way we cam up so we could get some glassading in All in all it was a great hike with a large group and if not for the wind would have easily been the lease hard 14er I've done. Great tune up for the season ahead! |
