Got up pretty far in a 2WD although we didn't make it as far as another group with some sort of Subaru. Post holed to camp but snow was firm in the morning. Since the normal summit route was blocked we did some *interesting* class 3/4 stuff about 100' below the summit. Awesome views of the San Juans. Used crampon / ice axe.

Beautiful day with great spring snow and perfect temperatures.
The last 1000' or so to the summit has a social trail that deviates from the summer route with a nice little shortcut. Awesome views of the rest of the range. Used poles / microspikes although they aren't strictly needed.

6/3/2013: Mount Yale 14,196'

Another beautiful day with great spring snow and perfect temperatures.
Some post-holing right at timberline. At about 12,600' we took a straight line up the snow to the ridge it was perfect, because of the snow we were able to gain and lose the elevation between 12,600' and 13,900' FAST! Far better than summer conditions in my opinion (even considering the little bit of post-holing)
The remaining climb to the summit going south on the ridge and was an awesome short little trek because it was all snowed over and allowed the climber to stay on the ridge the entire time.
We really enjoyed Yale. We used microspikes although they aren't strictly needed. Don't worry about snowshoes.
I must say the Yale trail is WELL DONE!! Seriously good job to whoever is responsible for building/maintaining this trail!

Doing these two Sawatchers helped remedy the opinion I had of the Sawatch range as my last two peaks here were Columbia and Princeton. Hope to continue to clean house on this range the rest of this week and take advantage of the spring snow (and my time off work).
