A Walk in the Park - Lily Mountain: (almost in) The Rocky Mountain National Park
A Walk in the Park - Lily Mountain from Lily Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park - Elevation 9,786 ft.
Distance 4 miles
Elevation Gain - 1,200 ft
Participants - Sarnelli
The purpose of this trip report is actually to welcome Tyler Prince (MountainMedic) back to the great state of Colorado, but I figured in order to make it an official report, I'd have to climb/hike something. So today I got back on the horse, and headed for the big park. I didn't know exactly where I was going when I got in the jeep, but I did know the objective... Summit something, anything.... Can't say I have been on the summit of any peaks so far in 2013, so this was long overdue. It would be a gathering of one.
The last time I ventured into The Park, it looked something like this.... Rocky Mountain National Park - November 22, 2012 - Hallett Peak looms in the distance
Today, not so much... man sits on bench in awe of the mighty Longs!
no words
There is a trail to the Lily summit that goes around the north side of the mountain from the road, but I didn't know this at the time. I started on the separate ridge trail that parallels the lake from above. After about a quarter of a mile, I decided that I needed to start going up... There is a lot of scrambling to be had up the snow free south facing side.
wherever you look, it follows you
not the summit
i made a friend
made some more friends...
future ROCKY summits!
the views are spectacular
Once you reach the first summit, you can traverse across the ridgeline to the actual summit. The rock is stable and the views are awesome. the task at hand - the summit of Lily Mountain in the distance
a look back... The narrow slab in the middle of the picture is where I took the picture of the climber rapelling
Summit of Lily Mountain - Elevation 9,786 ft
Lily Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park
DISCLAIMER - Lily Lake is in Rocky Mountain National Park, Lily Mountain is not in the park.
And that concludes the mountaineering segment of this report. On to more important things...
On friday night our friend, Tyler Prince, returned to Colorado after a 7 month absence to recover from his ankle injury suffered last August. Welcome home Tyler!!! We all missed your head and we're glad your ankle recovery is going well. You'll be out and about chasing 14ers (and Emma) soon enough.... I'd say your chances increase exponentially if you bring back that stache though!
Welcome Home Tyler
And to conclude:
MOM! HAPPY HAPPY MOTHERS DAY!
Last, I have 14 14ers left. It's about time I get off my @ss. Anyone want to come along?
Eric - haha, thanks man. Let me know when we are going to be on the same mountain on the same weekend in 2013! Brian - excellent thread in the forum, nice work, see you in the RMNP! D - There is a lyric to a song, I think you might know it. In reference to this TR, I think it very appropriate right about now. ROCKY 2, buddy, ROCKY 2! Jeff - timestamps are special, like you. Later fellas!
Great report Dillon, and nice photos of the park. Looks like the first summit of the year was a great one for you. And welcome back Tyler, glad to see your recovery is going well!
Dillon, I'm in for a hike anytime. Tyler, welcome home!
