Grays and Torreys From Loveland Pass

Peaks: Point 12,915, Cupid Peak (13,117'), Grizzly Peak D (13,427'), Torreys Peak (14,267'), Grays Peak (14,270')
Date: December 29, 2012
Trailhead: Loveland Pass
Distance: 12 miles
Elevation Gain: 6,300 ft.
Participants: Ben Shulman, Dillon Sarnelli
Time: 11 hours

On Friday night Shulman sent me a texter that said "KC and Challenger?", to which I responded, "Grays and Torreys, it's closer?". Nine hours later he was shivering on my doorstep and we were moseying on over to Loveland Pass. At about 6:30 AM we exited the warm comforts of the jeep and headed for Point 12,915. This point is about a mile and 1,000 feet vertical from the pass and the remainder of the trek is along the Continental Divide. Keep Reading...

My very own shout out!

It's not too often you see the sun rise and set from above 13K. That's pretty freakin cool. I was too busy taking photos at home with the Olympus Sarnelli 3000 (timestamp ON, of course) to make this one - although I'd probably still be up there somewhere. I ate some donuts and did a pushup (or two) instead.

You seem to love these winter epics! Oh, and the Mile High Carolina is a sandwich, which you hopefully ordered. Along with the fried pickles.

I've done as far as Grizzly D as a snow route, and that was exhausting enough. Kudos to you and Ben for adding both Grays and Torreys.

And wait, there's something called a Mile High Carolina? WHY HAS NO ONE TOLD ME THIS?

Long Slog

This looks like a long walking slog - I don't suppose it's buried in enough to be skiable? Likely better in the spring.

DDD - 1st TR comment! Thanks boss. Ben may still be up there, so he probably got to see the sun rise and set from 13K all week! PS - Miles called. He wants to know if we can trade cameras. PSS - Rocky called. He wants Drago in 2013!.... ”some” donuts, eh?

Ben? - You home yet? I wrote a trip report. Ben?

Tyler - I gave Stacy a Mile High Carolina sandwich this morning.

Chris, Jay, Ameristrat & Nick - Thanks guys. Pictures are easy in CO. It was a LONG haul, a little more than we bargained for, but the weather was solid and we got an early start. If there had been more snow, I'd probably still be out there with Ben! Thanks for the comments.

Jeff - Thanks man. I only put 19 pictures in the TR. Look at myself. Stacy can tell you ALL about the Mile High Carolina sandwich.

Keith - nice work. It doesn't get much better than Smokin' Yards BBQ (and those boiled peanuts) after a long winter trek!

jmc5040 - Cupid with a -30 windchill gets you a trophy in my book! I'd still be in my bed.

Keri?!?! really? - haha, welcome to the forum!

* MtnHigh - not enough white stuff to ski back there yet. Maybe off the back side of Grizzly down the saddle.... For now it's mostly stay high, some postholing and aim for the rocks.

Ahhh, what a winter this was. Repeating snowflakes on G&T was a great way to kick things off. Hopefully Dillon comes out of tax hibernation soon.
