Mt. Champion & Pt. 13,736 - South Ridge from Hwy 82

Another bluebird day was forecast as was the closing of Hwy 82 over Indy Pass. Seemed like the perfect time to aim for two Bicentennials, Mt. Champion and Pt. 13,736.

The parking area was empty and the morning a bit on the chilly side. We opted for a climb of Champion right out of the gate to warm the bodies and get the hard part over with. Our route was a bushwhack for the first couple hundred yards after crossing the stream, then we hit a strong track that offered access to an open trough leading upwrd. The Champion Mine distracted us from our line but the summit soon followed.

The cold winds caught up with us at that point and chilled hands and bodies across the whole of the traverse to Pt. 13,736, where we took shelter in the rocks before heading down to the saddle in order to drop to the valley below. The route down proved to be a talus challenge with a cliffy reward at the bottom. The desent did come to an eventual end and after crossing the valley floor, we found the fast track to the truck. I'd guess about 6 miles and 6 hours for two summits.

The usual Narrative with photos for those interested in more detail.
