 Part 2: San Juan Trip

7/22/12
We were happy to be able to start early on Uncompahgre after our storm experience the day before.

After hiking up the 4WD road we got to the trailhead.

After a short while of meadow hiking we got out first view of the day of Uncompahgre.
Image

We gained the saddle and got a view of Wetterhorn, it looks a lot different from across a valley.

We hiked around Uncompahgre's cliffs to a little gully to get through them.

The gully led to a gentle area below Uncompahgre's summit.

Uncompahgre has a big summit.

We walked down from Uncompahgre and drove over to Ouray. Ouray was completely socked in, and it was obvious that we would need to wake up early for Sneffels.

We camped just below the no camping past this point signs on the road up to Sneffels. A 3:30AM alarm was set to ensure success. We got to the top of Lavender gully at sunrise.

The second gully was still preety wet from the storm the day before.

After the gully a quick 2+ scramble got us to the summit ridge.

We were first to summit, I think we were up there at 6:40 something.

Me on Sneffels.

Lavender gully was a quick descent but I slid and got my shorts muddy.

We walked down to my car, and headed over to Telluride to meet my dad and step mom, and do the Wilson group.

You would have really liked the SW Ridge on Mt. Sneffels, too bad you didn't take that route on your way up!

We were so worried about weather that day (70% chance of thunderstorms) that we took the quickest route up. Looking back on our time up there and when there actually were storms that day, I wish I would have tried that route. Another day.
