 Something Spectacular on Mt Sherman

Monday - July 23, 2012
Mt. Sherman - 14,036 feet
Trailhead departure time - 6:15 am
Summit time - 8:18 am

Mt. Sherman.

Nothing spectacular about it. Many of you have hiked it, if not multiple times. This was my third.

But today, Mt Sherman was nothing short of spectacular... for this Dad was living out his dream to get his four girls to experience the love of hiking in the Colorado Rockies that my parents had given to me. My girls were going for their first 14er.

To see that passion in all four of my girls.... to sense that spirit of adventure rising up in them as we prepared for the hike... brought great joy to my heart.

The morning was glorious, with a slight wind in our faces as we parked at the gate and began the ascent. A group prayer opened the morning and we were off!

A few morning light shots of Hilltop Mine as we make our way up the trail. My girls asked "which one" we were going to summit. They seemed to choose the shorter looking Mt. Sheridan. I pointed them the other way.... and then there was silence! They were processing that in their 15, 13, 13 and 13 year old minds.

The short switchbacks snaking their way towards the saddle met us in the warming sun. The girls were doing well and were making good time as they picked their way along the rocks.Image

The saddle was reached and the girls were seeing the more challenging part of Sherman looming ahead.Image

The trek up the last stretch was shared with some self doubt and some trepidation, but with some gentle consoling and words of support, they hiked on... cresting the ridge and eyeing the summit at last!Image

A special time on the summit for us all!Image

The hike down was joyous and carefree, everyone was still reveling in the fact that they had just hiked a 14er!ImageImage

We stopped at the saddle for a word of prayer- giving thanks to God for who He is and marveling at His handiwork.Image

A few fun shots on thew way down and then a final pic of the crew arriving at the car.ImageImageImage

What an amazing blessing to have my four girls hike with me this morning. Something spectacular did indeed happen on Mt. Sherman today!

Very sharp pics you took there, I'm guessing you used a DSLR camera for these? Nice composition and depth of field as well.

Also, did you have triplets?

To piggyback dillon, looks like someone is going to be paying quite a bit for out of state tuition.

Sounds like a great family trip. Hopefully this is the first of many peaks for them.

Thanks for the comment

djkest - yes... a Canon 7D...still learning how to use it.

Triplets - yes indeed! I am sure that there have been triplets to summit 14ers, but to get all four up was great!

Lemmiwinks - let's pray that in state tuition to Nebraska is in the plan for them unless they get some great scholarships!
