 Bierstadt...My first attempt at a 14er

We planned our Colorado vacation around attempting our very first 14er. Stayed in Georgetown on the first so that we could be at the trailhead early. We arrived at the parking lot around 6:30 with the plan to reach the summit no later than 10. We thought slow and steady would get us to the top. Did I mentioned that we are from Illinois. We made it through the willows and started our climb. Lots of people were passing us, but we were having a great time. Met a guy who was from Florida and hiking his first 14er, too. A little way up the trail we looked down to see a bull moose following us up the trail at a very uncomfortably close distance. A bit a yelling and hollering chased him off the trail and we were all on our way. We were moving much slower now (guess we aren't in as good of shape as we thought.) Still we pushed on...more people passing us. People are now on their way down from the summit, wishing us good luck. At this point the clouds are starting to roll in. Hmmm. Two guys that are on their way down caution us to watch the sky.(Thank you!) At this point I am hoping to make the ridge, but I was moving so slowly that I knew I couldn't make it. A little distant thunder sealed the deal. Time to head back. Just as we reached the willows it started to rain. We were hoping it was a passing shower, but then it began to sleet. Ouch. The rain stopped just as we crossed the creek. Got back to the car at around 1:30. We were tired and wet, but met some nice people, saw incredible scenery and had a great time. So even though we didn't summit, it was well worth the trip!

following your gut with respect to the weather. Storms come so quickly in the mountains IMO always best to be safe.

Good try guys

Sorry you didn't summit but hopefully your first 14er was still a good hike.

Come back soon and try it again!

We still had a great time. We drove to Evans the next morning, so I still was able to stand on top of a 14er!
