 No cars, what a treat!

My son and I had planned on hiking Mt. DeCaLiBros but we had been evacuated due to the Waldo Canyon fire. Then it occurred to me, the Pikes Peak Highway was closed. We could hike Pikes Peak without the most annoying part of the hike, tourists and cars. Plus we would also get a great view of the Waldo Canyon Fire

We left from the Crags at 5:00 AM. Within 15 minutes we were passed by 2 other people. For the remainder of the hike we did not see a single person till just before the final ascent. We had Pikes Peak all to ourselves! Marmots were all over the place and we saw a herd of 6 Big Horn Sheep. I may never get the chance again to hike that mountain in the summer and not have to dread the traffic on the road or the throng of tourists at the top. What a gift to have that for my son's first ascent to Pikes Peak.

The view of the fire was amazing and terrible at the same time. I have hiked and fished so many places in the Rampart Range area. Most of them are now burned out. But, on the fun side we both got to watch several attack helicopters fighting the fire, which was pretty cool. We ran into a total of 7 other hikers the entire day. Only 4 of them went to the peak. What a gift!
