Holy Cross-way too early to climb!

We planned to backpack up and down Half Moon Pass the first day to cut off part of the trip (Northeast Slope Route). As it turns out, there is a locked metal gate at the beginning of Tigiwon road. This road is 8 miles and leads to the trailhead. I think the gate won't open up until June 20th, we didn't know this so the first night we backpacked up the road the first night and did the entire climb the next day. There was still a lot of snow on the pass and trail before and after tree-line. Numerous times the trail disappeared under the snow and we had to either go around and find the trail again later, or go through it (which by the end of the day had us sinking in to our knees and sometimes hips). Gators were a good thing to have! Luckily once we cleared tree-line we followed our own trail up the mountain following the cairns and the trail occasionally when we could find it. Long long day, 15 hours including the backpacking out on Tigiwon Road. We had the mountain to ourselves the entire day though and it was beautiful weather This one might be a good one to wait until later in the summer to do!

So how was the 8 miles on the road to the trialhead? If the gate were open would it be easy to drive it?

The road is in great shape - I MTB'd up to the Lodge a few weeks ago as an early-season cruiser. Your 2WD will (carefully)get to the Half Moon trailhead, after the FS opens the road on June 20. Stop and grab a beetle-killed tree on your way down.

rock in road

he's right the road is in very good shape. the only thing was, a few yards past the gate there was a big rock in the road that would take a small car to get past. if the gate had been open we still wouldn't have been able to drive up the road because my ford escape wouldn't have fit in between the rock and the edge of the road (it dropped off). hopefully they move that by the time the gate opens
