 Bierstadt on a beautiful day

We did Bierstadt with my mom who is 54 years of age! She did fantastic but I figured I'd mention that a majority of the people crossing the creek fell into the water. As all of you know starting a 14er early is ideal. The only issue we had with this is that there is not a crossing on the creek and all the rocks and logs were covered with ice. The rocks don't look icy but trust me they are very slick so please be careful! Other than that there was snow higher on the mountain and more ice on the rocks near the ridge before the final assent. As long as you watch your step and pack warmer clothing your hike will be wonderful!

I started at approx 6:30am and I walked up the creek a little ways and was able to cross in relatively shallow water, but of course I had to roll up my pants and take my socks/shoes off. It was about 4 seconds of frozen torture, but my feet warmed back up once I was back on the trail. When I crossed the creek I noticed some bear tracks in the red mud so it's a good idea to head back to the trail fairly quickly. Once I got back down the mountain and headed to the parking lot, the water wasn't as high and the rocks were dry, so I was able to jump across the creak.

54 is young

A great accomplishment by your mom but I hope you are not trying to imply that 54 is old for doing a Fourteener. :-) Four of us in our 60's did Harvard, Belford/Oxford, Missouri and then Sherman on consecutive days. We saw three ladies in their 70's on Belford. Tell your mom to keep it up!
