 Mt Yale from Denny Creek

Mt Yale -9.5 miles RT

Colorado Springs to Denny Creek Trailhead: 2.5 hours
Trailhead at 9,900 ft to Summit at 14,196 ft: 3.5 hours
Summit to Trailhead: 2 hours (with some jogging down)
Total time: 5.5 hours (also 45 mins on top)

My son and I wanted to get our career fourteenth 14er in before it got too late into fall. After looking through Colorado's Fourteeners by Gary Roach, we decided to do Mt. Yale. Labor Day worked best for us, but I wasn't sure what the traffic would be at the trailhead so we decided to drive up on Sunday night and sleep in our vehicle. It was a 2.5 hour drive from Colorado Springs and the parking lot was easy to find 12 miles up CR 306. It is a paved road which is nice after all the fwd trails we had been on during the summer. We arrived and got the Pilot ready for the night. It has plenty of room for two in the back. A brother and sister arrived just after us and were doing the same thing.

After a good night sleep, we got up at 5:30AM. There is a bathroom facility at the parking lot. We started up the trail at 6:15AM, just at dawn. The trail winds through the trees and is very nice. Because it is 9.5 miles round trip it didn't seem as steep. We got above tree line in just under 2 hours. The trail to the saddle near the summit is also very good. I wore my boots, but I could have worn my trail shoes. I do have to save the boots saved me a few times on the way down. After my legs got tired I almost twisted my ankle three times so, I was glad I had the boots. After you reach the saddle, it is another 30 mins to the summit through a boulder field. There is just a little bit of scramble with one false summit but really an easy final ascent.

We were the second to summit that day just behind brother and sister and I think a few guys slept near the summit because they had sleeping bags. We enjoyed are traditional treat on top - dried mangos and chocolate for this trip. There wasn't much wind at the summit which made it pleasant. We decided to hustle down and jogged where the trail allowed. It is such a great trail that we were able to get back to the car in 2 hours.
