 1st 14er of the Year!

We decided to start off the climbing season with a relatively easy peak. We left Colorado Springs around 4am and made it to the Summit Lake TH around 6:15am. We were geared up and on the trail by 6:25am. The route over Mt. Spaulding was relatively easy to follow. We met a few "locals" along the way who really didn't give us much attention. We made it to the saddle between Spaulding and Evans and began our ascent. The trail on Evans was a little challenging at time to follow, but for the most part not too bad. Several large boulders to cross made the trip slow but do-able.

We made it to the summit at 10:19am and were surrounded by tourists who made the jaunt up the path from the parking lot. Other than the crowds claiming "I just bagged my 1st 14er" we had a good time on the summit.

We decided to head back over Mt. Spaulding rather than descend from Evans directly. The hike down the back side of Evans was slow going as we passed several hikers coming up. We reached the saddle of Spaulding and noticed the clouds were beginning to roll in. We decided to pick up the pace a bit to avoid potential storms.

We made it back to the car in the nick of time. It started to rain lightly as we drove back down to Idaho Springs.

All in all, an easy climb to start off the season!
