Mt. Bierstadt- Guanella pass trail head

Well this was my first 14er of the year, the season had kinda pushed my friend and me late into the season, but it was all worth the wait for this hike. This was our first 14er by ourselves (we're 17 this summer) and we figured to start on the hike as early as possible. To do that we camped at Guanella Pass Campground two miles from the trail head. That road was a difficult challenge for my little Honda Civic Ex, part due to the current constriction on the pass, but it made it eventually made it up.

We started our trip at 6:40 AM and expected the climb to take us about three hours. It was a difficult start, but we made good time. The weather was perfect and every condition was as good as could be. Without even realizing how fast we were going we ended up at the top at 8:08 PM. there the view was amazing and got to talk to a few people. Since we made good time we stayed there for almost an hour before heading back down.

On the way down the terrain is a little difficult at times, but not too bad. The trip down seemed much harder and longer, but that just because we didn't had the large goal in front of us like we did going up. we finally returned to the car at 11:03, and after saying our goodbyes to a new friend, my friend and I headed back home. Overall I loved this peak, it was a little stressful doing it for the first time on our own, but this peak is an excellent peak to teach the basics of how to hike a 14er, and how to prepare for one just as your about to hike it.

Thanks for the report and congrats! We plan to do the same later this month. Was the campground very busy? I am a bit worried, since they don't accept reservations and we are coming from out of state.

The campground can be pretty busy, I suggest going on a weekday, but if you can't try to get up there early. But if you can't find a spot there check Clear Lake campground just a few miles up the road.
