 Mt. Bierstadt - West Slopes

This morning I took a group of friends to the top of Mt. Bierstadt. None of them had summited a 14'er previously. We left Denver around 1:30 am and arrived at the trailhead at approximately 3:30 am. We didn't have any moonlight which led us to discover that this weekend was the Delta Aquarids and Capricornids meteor showers. We made it to about 13,500' when one of our company had to stop because of altitude sickness. We summited just before sunrise at 6:00 am but only stayed at the summit for photos before quickly descending to our friend and warmer temperatures (Despite my warnings, most of the group was wearing shorts and had only brought a sweatshirt). On the descent, we passed a staggering amount of people heading up the trail. We must have passed 300 people by the time we reached the willows, but thats what you get for the first weekend in a month without predicted midday thunderstorms. I was a little disappointed to leave our friend so close to the top, as well as not continuing to Evans via the sawtooth but making sure everyone made it back to the car safely was a good consolation. I may have to wait until next summer to cross the sawtooth as school starts soon.

Note to self, make sure your friends bring more supplies and start early. I would hate to share the summit with a hundred other people.
