My wife and I took a day off from work and decided to hike Mt Evans. My Godparents live in Bergen Park, so we drove up there and had dinner the night before. I like to be on the trail at least a half hour before sunrise, but the rest of the crowd decided getting going at 6:00 from the house was a good compromise.
We were on the trail by 7:00 and had reached the top of Spalding by 8:30. The skies were still clear and the winds were down. The day looked fantastic. Off to Evans we went. We were taking our time to keep the pace for my Godparents.
As we got Evans in our sights, we looked back to our right and there was a cloud, raining just a bit. With the wind blowing as it was, it was no threat, and passed to the west of us by a few miles. I watched the cloud as we got toward the summit and it got darker and there was more rain falling from it. Then we got the thunder. We were on the top and it was the only cloud in nearby, far to the southwest, but I still wanted to get down and out of there as fast as I could.
It was 10:30 when we summated, and our hike was almost cut short by weather. Be careful out there folks. That cloud went from white rain cloud to nasty thunder in 20 minutes. Overall it was a great day for a hike, but still a subtle reminder of how quickly the weather can change.
