 Mt. Elbert- Standard Northeast Slopes

Starting time: 8am
Ending time: 2pm
Starting elevation: ~10,000 ft.
Trailhead: North Elbert
Difficulty: Class 1 trail the entire way

The day started out at 5am at Rocky Mountain Mennonite Camp where the four of us work. We all had the day off and decided to go hike some mountains. Why not Elbert?

Arrived at the trailhead and got started around 8am. Lots of people were climbing for a Thursday. Several were running it. The trail starts out on mellow switchbacks through the forest. There are a few side streams running through/down the trail. Turned right at an intersection, the other trail was the Colorado trail. Continued up until we reached a little clearing then went back in the woods again. Beautiful weather. Sunny and a breath of wind to keep the temp. at a pleasant level. Reached treeline around 10:30 and then kept on until we reached the summit.

Bad weather rolled in around 11:30 but we decided to keep on. Thankfully the storm passed over. Reached the summit and shared it with many others. Met a fellow Virginia Tech Hokie up top which was awesome, Go Hokies!! Traded picture taking responsibilities with other groups up top then took in the awesome view of Massive to the north and La Plata to the South.

Just as we started descending a grouple storm kicked up and pelted us for about ten minutes. At least it wasn't a thunderstorm! Reached the forest rather quickly after enjoying a nice food break to watch the storm in the valley. Met a lady hiking the entire Colorado Trail in the forest. Reached the car and headed home. Terrific day in the mountains!

Just a heads up in your first picture, that is not actually ”the” top. That is the famous, and yet intimidating, false summit.
