Mt. Sherman Trip Report 07/07/2011

Sherman Glissading
We came up from Denver on Wednesday afternoon. We stopped and ate in Fairplay at the "Irish pub/liquor store" what a classy establishment. Actually the food was really good, if you decide to venture in order the strawberry jalapeno wings, they are awesome. We set up camp on a side road off of County Road 18, about a couple miles from the Fourmile Creek Trail head. We parked at the pull off below the Dauntless mine at 12,000 ft, and started up the trail at 5:41 am. It was a great morning not a cloud in the sky, and not too cold Fourmile Creek Once you get past the Dauntless mine you head east, then north underneath the Hilltop mine and then go left again above the mine. Hilltop Mine After passing the Hilltop mine, you continue up to the right then to the left again. At this point there is a snowfield you must cross to reach the saddle. The snow is stable and can be done without micro spikes or a walking aids. Snow field The saddle is at 13,000 ft, and you follow it to the right towards the summit. We kept to the left of the saddle where you have a great view of Leadville and Turquoise Lake to the left. You can also stay on the standard route to the right of the saddle, which we took on the way back down. The ridge narrows as you continue towards the summit, the rock is semi stable with a little scrabbling to do towards the top. The summit is pretty flat and to reach the register you continue on about another 1/4 mile. Summit! When we were coming down we stayed on the other trail to the left, and followed that back down to the saddle. At this point we could have gone down the way we came or glissade to the base of the hilltop mine! We chose to glissade! There is a deep shoot towards the end of the saddle that is perfect for the ride down. With our trusty trash bags we made a fast decent. One last picture of the shack below the hilltop mine, and then headed back to the car. All in all, it was a good trip with great weather. It took us a total of 2 hours and 41 minutes.
