My Prayers to the family of the hiker who lost her life.
My daughter and I decided to make this our first of the season and were going to take the north-east face route but didn't walk down the road far enough (my bad). It didn't appear to be very snowy so we figured we would be fine. So we ditched the snowshoes in the car and headed up.
At first it was fine but it soon became painfully obvious that we were off-course and heading up a route which was beyond our capabilities and gear. About 3/4 of the way up (too far to turn back yet far enough you could taste the summit) there were massive snow fields. We cut a sharp left and was able to connect to what I think was the north-east ridge, carefully traversing through the snow-fields, sticking close to the boulders. My foot hit an icy boulder at one point and I came down hard enough I thought I shattered my elbow but I stuck my elbow in a snowbank, and moved it around...needless to say my elbow and pride are merely bruised.
We continued towards some square rocks up ahead and were finally able to see the top (parking lot) and scaled over the wall (hahaha) it was truly a funny thing to see. My daughter gave up in the parking lot and me and the dog continued to the summit. IT was definitely NOT the best route because of the conditions, but for me, it certainly beats the long hike around the lake. The trip down was pretty much as eventful as the trip up but this time we stuck as close to the north-east route. I have to say, there wasn't a clearly marked trail that I could find and I'm grateful we managed to do this mountain without incident...but it was purely luck and (using caution) that we did.
