 Rough first trip up Evans

Hit the TH from Guenella at 7:30. With all of the melt, it was a sloppy trip from the first steps. We followed the route plan from the site and took a left at the big rock. From there, there is not much of a trail and we bashed willows for about an hour and a half. We tried to get to the trees on the right of Gomer, but ended up crossing over and just trying to get to the NW slope leading up to Evans. We saw plenty of people that crossed much earlier and went up and around Gomer closer to Spalding. They seemed much smarter and moved a lot faster.

It was a difficult hike snaking up the inside of the bowl that Evans, Beirstadt and Sawtooth create. My guess is that this is not the ideal route.

Weather started to set in and it was very cold and windy. We stopped just short of the peak and called it a day. Up to there took us about 4 to 4.5 hours.

On the trip back (downhill was MUCH easier), we tried to learn from what we did wrong on the way up. We stayed to the North of Gomer and dropped down through the trees. We actually picked up a pretty well defined trail (totally missed that on the way up) and got back to the Bierstadt trail and the truck. Took about 3 hours to get back.

Very tough but enjoyable day, but learned a lot of what not to do. Want to try again.

I commend you for having the judgment in knowing when you should call it quits and turn back. That's a tough decision, but a smart one.
