 Wetterhorn - East Face Ski

I've had a Trip Report Alert out there for both the Matterhorn Creek TH and Wetterhorn trip reports and was happy to receive the alert on Monday for the Wetterhorn TR by pioletski. The road was open to the end, just the way I like it.

Down

I started the ski at 8:00am and the snow was about as good as it was going to get. It was softening up but very sun-cupped.

Thanks for the pics. I like to do Wetterhorn every year, but haven't done it as a spring climb. Just might have to do it.

Hi Bill,

Did you consider going straight up the east face as a snow climb?

I was going to climb the east face but decided to take the standard route because I wanted to see what it's like when there's snow to deal with on the standard. Climbing the east face would have been much quicker.

We're headed down there Saturday for a sun-cupped ski descent. Thanks for the conditions update. East face does look like it would make a nice climb, if we're not punching through.

Great Report

I am climbing Wetterhorn on Saturday 6/25 and appreciate the beta. So the road was open all the way to the summer TR correct? We will be doing the standard route, do we need cramp-ons for the trip? Looks like it to me. We do have snow shoes to get through the basin, but was unsure if cramp-ons were necessary.
GREAT REPORT

The road is open to the end. Crampons might still be helpful in some spots, but you could probably do it without as long as you have an axe. There's snow up to and on the SW ridge (standard) and a few steep patches before the Prow.
