| Jones & Niagara |
Ran up Jones & Niagara last Wednesday. Trail runners and strap on aluminum crampons sufficed. Axe absolutely required. Cooper got it right when he called Niagara one of his favorite snow climbs. Not exactly long or steep, but it makes up for that with position and solitude.
You could probably ski 2000' from the summit of Niagara, but only 500 of them would be sort of steep. I walked with a single trekking pole and no traction to >13k.
Carried the snow shoes just for fun, but didn't need them. I finished before 10A, but might have wanted them if walking out any later.
5.5 hours RT for both peaks from the 2WD trailhead. 4WD won't be accessible anytime soon due to a raging Animas and big debris piles on the road.
First entry on the Jones register this year, but I doubt it was the first visit. Niagara's register is buried, if it even has one. I saw some old ski tracks up Burns Gulch.
