Kilpacker basin Trailhead

Posted By: jeffs
Info: Road was clear to the TH. Passed a Mini Cooper and a Mustang convertible with the top down on the way out!? I’m not sure the road is THAT smooth....

Info: Hit continuous old snow drifts across the road at about 2.3 mi from TH. Looks like someone tried to drive across the first drift unsuccessfully, the tire tracks barely made it halfway.

Info: Per Norwood Ranger District the road is clear to the TH

Info: This is currently a 2wd road. Even with all the rain and mud it’s a low clearance Honda Fit or Prius 2wd road. Also watch closely. The turn off of 145 headed south from Telluride is on your right exactly 5.1 miles from the Lizard Head Pass sign. It is marked with a small sign that I think says 535.

Info: Great road conditions all the way to the TH.

Info: No sign of 4 wheeled tracks or travel on this road, except people unloading from the paved shoulder at the start of the road. There are ski and snowmobile tracks going up the road now.

Info: FR 535 right off CO 145 has a blanket of snow over it & shows no sign of having recently been driven on. A fairly deep drift area has formed at the bottom of the first incline.

Info: Driving by, so I did a little recon. Dry all the way to TH. Hiked in running shoes for a mile and a half before turning around due to deeper, patchy snow (need gaiters). Turned around before the fork.

Info: Still in good shape for 2wd passage. Very narrow first 3 miles with limited turnouts. Be wary of impatient downhill drivers.

Info: Road Clear and in good shape for 2wd all the way.

Info: Easily passable by any vehicle, standard bumps and what not. The first half mile is probably the roughest and has some steep switchbacks.

Info: Road is open and in great shape. Passable for all vehicles.

Info: The directions say to turn right on "Forest Road". Please note that you should turn right (west) on Forest Road 535. There is also a sign here that says "Dunton". This intersection is about 5 miles past Lizard Head pass if you are coming from Telluride.

Info: Tried to get to Kilpacker Basin TH off of hwy. 145 via Lizard Head pass. Lots of snow in the trees. Stuck for 3-1/2 hrs. Lots of shoveling!!!!

Info: Agree 4WD not needed, however the first hill is steep by 2WD standards. Also until past that first hill the road is narrow enough that when vehicles meet, one stops at a good spot while the other slowly passes. The road surface is mostly in good maintained shape. There were a lot of horse trailers.

Info: This trailhead is by no means 4wd. My first time there was in a VW Jetta and the second in a Honda Civic. No problems either time. Didn‘t even have to drive all that slow.

Info: Road is clear to trailhead.

Info: The road is clear to the trailhead, except for one small patch of snow about 12 inches high. I was able to cross in a front drive sedan with no problems.

Info: Trailhead is open if approached from the NE.
