Recent snowfall has made the road a little less accessible. That being said, the lower part of the road was packed down pretty well from traffic from houses/ranches along the road. Past the residences, on Saturday the snow got packed down by 4-5 vehicles. Once you get to the Horseshoe campground, the snow becomes deeper -- noticeably between the tire trenches. The group I was with stopped about .9 mile before the first Leavick building on the right side of the road. 4WD is essential.

How far from US 285?

I've never been to this one. How far could I safely drive from US 285 in a 2WD Camry? How many well-packed miles before it becomes sketchy and unpacked snow?

I think we drove about 9 miles from the turnoff, but someone with a car such as Terry would be able to give a sure answer. At the end of the day the road was packed for a few hundred yards past where we had parked, as an XTerra had gotten stuck and needed to turn around. Unless the snow settles or melts considerably I wouldn't plan on getting more than 4-5 miles up the road simply because the snow is deep between the tire tracks. I feel like we barely had enough clearance in a Blazer, Jeep Wrangler and Honda CRV. Hope that helps. Also as Terry said, I feel like 4wd is essential to get anywhere on this road now. Hope that helps.
