Firstly the guanella pass is closed 1.7 miles from trailhead (3.4 miles added to total route). But anyways we started at 7 a.m. and didn't finish for 11 hours! We stopped and relaxed a lot but if you are doing this in the winter, give yourself time!!
Snow shoes in the meadows would have been extremely helpful but not necessity and boot spikes were a plus. I personally didn't wear mine and I did just fine. The snow adds one hell of an extra element but all in all if you are looking for a challenging but safe winter 14er, this is it!

So I'm thinking about hiking this mountain this weekend but all the CDOT info says guanella pass is closed the whole way up. Is this wrong or did you guys find a different way up?

Guanella Pass Road

The road is always open since the energy plant needs to have a clear path. The road only closes at the winter trail head as the plowing stops there. I will be doing this hike tomorrow and will take pictures of everything on the way up.

Is it legal to park up there? If so is it a dedicated lot or just on the side of the road?

It is a legal parking area. Here is a Google Map of the lot: https://www.google.com/maps/@39.6096177,-105.7175,47m/data=!3m1!1e3

Just one more quick question, the road up to this lot should be open right?

I just got back from Bierstadt. Everything was all good and was a pretty easy day. I'll post a report later this evening.
