Route is doable in summer gear (no axe or traction devices). Only small amount of snow in the broken hand pass. I did the climb in trail running shoes.

Before our hike on Friday (7/8) were very concerned about the possible need for crampons. Unless there is a freeze over, we agree that no crampons are necessary. Trekking poles did come in handy as there is still a couple spots up broken hand pass that you will cross over snow. We only used our ice axes once and really didn't need them. Also, boots seem more fitting for this hike. There are many spots where you need good traction.
