Gained the East Ridge from the Mill Creek TH. Dry conditions until approximately 11,200-ft when following the trail. Snow most of the way from there to the summit. South slopes below treeline became wet by late morning with high temps and sun. Above treeline the snow was fairly consolidated, but not full spring pack. Small wind slab formed in the upper bowl from prior days snowfall. Was able to ski off the summit, down the East Ridge and drop into the bowl at lower angle terrain. Traversed some rock to regain snow just below the false summit on the ridge. Skied back to 11,200-ft following my ascent route to avoid bushwhacking.

Road?

Sounds like the road is open to the Mill Creek Trailhead? I’m wondering how far up you saw a spot I could park my trailer and trailer camp. Thanks for the update!

Road is Open

Yes, the road is bone dry. The other side of the Mill Creek bridge going to the camp area had at least a foot of snow, more in spots so I parked along the road. The road is fairly wide at spots, but I didn’t note an area for a trailer, but wasn’t looking. Maybe check Google satellite and see what exists along the road. The road was open past Mill Creek TH, but don’t know for how far.

Gear Recommendation?
3/31/2015 12:58am
I’m a fairly experienced backpacker, but am new to Colorado’s conditions. This looks like a wonderful hike for when I have some free time in about a month, but I was wondering if you could advise me as to what you would expect conditions to require. Do you think Snowshoes or skis would be necessary? Or could the trip be made in just crampons?

Any recommendation would be appreciated, and thanks in advance.

Gear

It’s hard to say what gear will be required a month from now. The current pattern we’ve seen is a month a head of normal and it could stay like this or get snowier. With that said, even with snow the route can be done with only snowshoes... nothing steep warranting crampons. Keep in mind this isn’t the standard route for Sunshine and there isn’t much of a trail. It’s steep with loose dirt/rock for a good chunk till the ridge is gained. Even in winter the lower section is typically snow free due to the southern aspect. There are some sections just below the ridge that need to be traveled wisely if there are avalanche conditions.

Glad you got it done, Jordan. Looks like it’s still wintery up there.
