Disagree w/prior reports about optional traction. It felt mandatory yesterday in AM. The snow is still very solid, with long enough runouts that traction (or a significant elevation loss to circumnavigate the snow patches) is mandatory. The mosquitoes, though definitely still around, aren't as horrible anymore.

Just adding, there's a good 1000 vertical ft of steep snow on approach to k2, bulletproof sheet before sunrise, spikes were enough, and an axe would provide security. On descent this field is treacherous. Spikes will not give traction and an axe would certainly make that descent much more comfortable. A few good glissade routes, and I was able to control myself with just my feet, but if I was unable to there were plenty of rocks to ruin your day. Punching through was rare, but happened once to me minorly and once up to my hip.
