Pikes Peak - Northwest Slopes:
After the winter storm we had a little over a week ago, I decided to try my first real winter ascent.
The road to the Crags Campground TH was plowed to about 1.5 miles from the TH. I had called the Rocky Mountain Mennonite Camp up there the day before to ask about conditions, and they were very helpful.
Lots of fresh powder, snowshoes were a definite necessity - but I was still sinking up to the knees every step. The snowshoe/x-country ski tracks ended just around my 3-mile mark, so I headed up the mountain rather than wander through the trees. I reached the north end of the mountain (by Sheeps Ridge) after 9 hours of hiking. Turned around as I realized that I was going to run out of light if I kept heading for the summit. I also was definitely feeling it from breaking my own trail, especially since it was my first trip on snowshoes.
Made it back home just in time to see the last quarter of the Superbowl!
