The U.S. Geological Survey named the mountain "Sunshine Peak" in 1904. In 1874, A.D. Wilson, chief topographer, and Franklin Rhoda of the Hayden U.S. Government Survey made the first ascent of the mountain and designated it simply as "Station 12," one of a series of survey triangulation stations in the San Juan Range. Earlier the peak was known as "Niagra Peak" and "Sherman Mountain."
