Personal locator beacon (PLB) rental (EPIRB, GPS emergency signal device)

I just bought an ACR TerraFix 406 personal location beacon (PLB) from REI. It cost $450 and I expect to use it only a few days a years so if anyone wants to borrow it we can work out a rental. There\‘s a company in Washington that rents PLBs for $59/week. I\‘m in Boulder.

A PLB is electronic device for emergency rescues. If you need to be rescued, you push a button (actually you hold down two buttons) and the device calls a satellite, transmits your GPS location, then the satellite calls the NOAA, and they call the local sheriff or rangers. A PLB works anywhere, unlike a cellphone. Mostly they\‘re used on boats and aircraft. The ACR TerraFix 406 weighs 14 ounces.
