My condolences to the family and friends of one of the climbing community's best, David Breashears, who died at 68 at his home in Massachusetts. His family submitted a statement to the outlet.
It is with great sadness that we share the news that our beloved David passed (of natural causes) this morning. He was a brother, father, friend, colleague and a caring, passionate advocate of adventure, exploration and the health of our planet. We are heartbroken by this loss and respectfully request privacy at this difficult time.
A skilled climber and photographer, he was best known as the director of the 1998 IMAX film Everest. However, his rescue efforts in the 1996 Everest disaster (which informed the 2008 Frontline documentary Storm Over Everest) highlighted his contributions to climbing. Breashears summited Everest five times.

I just heard about this, Alan. So sad. I loved his book High Exposure. Seemed like such a great guy, from everything I've read about him.

I was just getting started climbing when the ‘96 Everest disaster happened, so Breashears and Krakauer were pretty influential to me. That IMAX movie and Nat Geo book were a BIG deal at the time. I need to pull High Exposure out and reread it. RIP

RIP David. I must have watched Everest IMAX 20 times getting it as soon as it was available back then on DVD and Blue Ray. It really inspired me to explore the mountains more.

Having looked at perilous journey early in my climbing career, it changed my perspective on cool headed perseverance. I have nothing but respect for all he achieved. If we could aspire to such greatness. Thank you, David.

I have also watched the Everest IMAX movie at least that many times. Amazing footage.

RIP David Breashears.
