Home page changes

Post by BillMiddlebrook »

The home page has been updated with additional content that's visible when scrolling.

You'll notice "Planning" and "Checklist" content which I hope makes it easier for the average user to get started or find their way when new to the site. After reading email feedback and reviewing how people navigate to and through the site, it's clear that many newbies don't really know where to start. I want to help. I have a few more things to add to the scroll but I figured this was a good time to activate the new content.

If you're a site veteran who comes here mainly for the recent forum posts, you'll notice I put a green refresh button on the "Recent Activity" tabs. If you're viewing the site on a mobile device, don't fret, "Recent Activity" shifts to the bottom of the home page scroll. If you can scroll to it and use that green refresh button tabs get refreshed in-place, without changing position or reloading the home page.

I still have a few changes to make related to Display Settings defaults.

Positive suggestions are welcome...

Thanks for reading

Hey Bill - Love the site and thank you for all that you've done in creating and maintaining it over the years!

This is just me - one of the cool things is seeing all the pics on the home page, but now there is the text at the top of the page where the pics are displayed, so that is a bit of a distraction (especially if you look at the site....every day). Also, looks like the capability to minimize the Recent Activity (so you can see the whole pic on the home page) has been removed. Would be nice to have that back.

Thanks Much!

Thanks, Dan!
The "collapse" arrow for Recent Activity is just disabled for now and will be back. I'm still testing a few things and I haven't gotten to that yet.
As far as the title, yeah I can add a "Hide Title" option in Display Settings->Home Page Settings. I'm redoing a couple of items in display settings right now...

Looks good - a little cluttered now, but I'm assuming the "Track Your Progress" section is just an FYI and temporary...?

Don't know if this is intentional, but the pause button for the photo carousel scrolls down with the page, seems out of place and like it should be locked onto the photo itself.

Edit: Now looking, I'm realizing that the photo is actually the background and doesn't scroll, the content is scrolling on top of it. I still think the pause button being on top of other content is kind of weird, though.

Sarcasm or not, it's not even funny to post something like this. Not at this time. Reported.

1) Cleaned up the "Track Your Progress" section.

2) Yes, if your home page Display Settings are set to show a "14er Photo Gallery," the slideshow takes place on the background. I adjusted the pause/resume/caption but have a little more tweaking to do on that.

It's snowing...⛷️

Bill, thanks for all you do to maintain a great site. As a reward, I hereby give you permission to go skiing now. :)

Not exactly related, but I have a minor thing that's bothered me for a while. I pretty much exclusively use the mobile site, and to access profile/dashboard, there's a small user icon in the top right corner. Problem is, if you tap it, that spot immediately becomes "log out". I have accidentally logged out hundreds of times (maybe) over the last few months trying to access things. Any way that drop down could be slightly changed so that the logout is elsewhere?

Ah yes, that drives me crazy too - used to be a magnifying glass for searches right next to the logout button as well so that any attempt to search resulted in a log out. Looks like that portion has been tweaked.

Maybe either move or resize the buttons by the logout or have some kind of "Are you sure?" pop-up for logging out since the logout button is hazardously close to the notifications button at the moment (at least on a mobile device).

But guess that'll have to wait until the snow stops!

Haha! Sorry, I never noticed that.

I’ll fix that later so it doesn’t execute a log off. Ya know, you could have saved yourself some frustration by yelling at me a long time ago.

Thanks! And noted, but it wasn't the worst mountain-related schadenfreude I've endured, so I let it be

It looks great! Thank you for your effort. Just to point out a minor typo in the "User Checklist" tab of the mobile version. In the 14ers tab the "Average number of 13ers per checklist" should read "Average number of 14ers per checklist".
