This is terrible news, the snowpack must be incredibly sensitive right now.

There have been two fatal avalanche incidents involving snowshoers, one involving skiers and none involving snowmobilers in Colorado this season. That could just be a statistical anomaly, but it seems more and more hikers are venturing out into mountainous terrain in the winter all the same. If you're new to navigating avalanche terrain and want to continue getting out through the winter, it behooves you to signup for an avalanche course or at the least to find a knowledgeable mentor to help explain avoidance and self-rescue.

Summer roads are not always safe.
Existing tracks on a slope do not always mean it's safe.
Being on flat ground instead of on a suspect slope itself, is not always safe.
