Massive / La Plata

Post by judahpraise91 » Wed Apr 07, 2021 9:31 am

Looking to come out to Colorado at the end of the month for an attempt on Mount Massive/ La Plata Peak. I haven't seen any recent trail reports/trailhead reports on conditions for these two and just wondered if anyone had been to either recently/had any insight as to whether or not the trailheads would be accessible/worth the trip out. Any information would be awesome, thanks!

La Plata trailhead is plowed through the winter, as is the fish hatchery trailhead for Massive. You shouldn't have any issues getting to either.

La Plata trailhead is open year round - standard route could still have avy potential at the end of the month. If so, you'd want to come prepared to tackle the imposing headwall on the winter variant for the ridge direct (the technical aspect of it isn't bad but it's a real eye-popper when you first walk up to it...)

Massive, if you do the East Ridge from the fish hatchery is also open year round and is generally avy safe (main summer route iffy in both regards - note that several conditions reports refer to the East Slopes but mention starting from the fish hatchery. Those were incorrectly selected from the drop-down - if you're coming from the fish hatchery you're on East Ridge, not East Slopes).
